Introduction

My name is Clara White. I am a student at the University of Alabama majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Political Science on the Pre-Law track. I am from Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Vestavia Hills High School in May of 2023.

Personal Narrative

I have always struggled with little quirks that seem to interfere with my daily life. When I was 16, I was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This diagnosis explained a lot about the ways in which I was struggling. I was put on Zoloft after receiving this diagnosis, which did not work for me at all. Zoloft created a whole new set of problems. Today, I have not been on Zoloft in over a year and I am learning how to cope with my OCD. My OCD has been something that I have been able to embrace recently, and even though it might make me think different or act differently, it doesn't make me any less of a person. This experience has had a large effect on my academic journey. Unfortunately, my OCD makes it really hard for me to cope with being unsuccessful academically at times. I hyper-fixate on my grades and have always made all As because of it, but college is more challenging academically, so keeping up all As has become harder and in turn triggered my OCD more. However, the bright side to this is that I am very organized academically and most of the time I always do my best and am able to stay on top of things. OCD can be debilitating but I know that the challenges that come with it are challenges I am able to overcome.

Interests and Passions

I am a big fan of television from reality shows like Vanderpump Rules and The Bachelor to comforting nostalgic shows like Gilmore Girls. I also have a great passion for music, from learning about music theory, to playing bass guitar, to listening to my favorite artists such as Taylor Swift. I have an interest in health both mental and physical, learning about different mental health disorders and also learning about exercise and dieting. I am passionate about education, not just my education, but I want to become an educational lawyer to help children who have been discriminated against in their school systems by 504 plans and IEPs not being respected or honored. I love to learn about major historical events such as The Titanic. I am also very passionate about politics, specifically feminism. â€‹All of these things contribute to who I am as a person and my personality and I am proud of them all.

Values and Beliefs

I am very open about my personal values and my opinions. I am also very confident in them and not easily influenced by other people's opinions. However, I do value empathy a lot. I believe that there are so many diverse opinions, perspectives, and people, and the more willing we are able to try to understand how these people feel, the community in which we are placed will be a more welcoming environment for everyone. With this, one of my strongest beliefs is in feminism. This belief has been instilled in me my whole life as I grew up in a Presbyterian church where women were welcome to become ministers as women are seen as a crucial part in the body of Christ. Now, I consider myself to be an activist for women's rights, specifically in the controversial conversation of abortion. I find laws made about my body to be violating, and despite that being a controversial opinion in the state of Alabama, I am not afraid to voice it.

Strengths and Areas of Growth

I believe one of my biggest strengths is my decisiveness. I think that when I am given a task, I am able to plan a course of action and get it done. However, this also goes with one of my biggest strengths, which is stubbornness. I tend to be very hard headed and while I understand other people's perspectives and respect them, I have a hard time adjusting my own views or admitting when I might have been off-target. I have been actively working on this lately and have been trying to say "yes" and agree more.
